1. Black box – Software not usually understood by most user -  it is when the person doesn’t know what the system does but knows how to use it.

Hierarchy – diagram where the most important level of a system is at the top

Resources – General term for components needed to perform a task

Interface - Meeting point between part of a system

Processors – Instructions that control processing

Procedures – instructions that control processing

Hardware – physical units that make up a system

Software – Programs or set of instructions

Data – individual facts put into a system

People – Users of a system

 

2a) Computer hardware cannot work without software.

b) Software is often called programs.

c) Programs that start up the computer and control its operation are systems software.

d) Operations system do not consist of one program.

e) Operating systems manage the hardware devices.

f) An application program is not the same as an operating system.

g) Application program do not consist mainly of utility.

h) Application programs need operating systems in order to work.

 

3a) Three jobs done by system software is that it manages, controls and provides an interface between hardware and application.

b) Four peripheral devices that require a driver are video card, printer, scanners and web cam.

c) two examples of utility software is the disk defragmenter and disk cleanup.

d) two different operating system is  Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X.

 

Software

Cli – command line interface

an interface to the Operating System where the user typically enters commands using the keyboard at the command line prompt.

Gui – graphical user interface

A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse.

Nli – natural language interface

Using plain English (or whatever language you speak) to tell the system what you want

Utilities

A program that performs a very specific task, usually related to managing system resources. Operating systems contain a number of utilities for managing disk drives, printers, and other devices. eg.

Custom built software - it is when a company for example requires a certain software to suit there needs and a group of people will normally be hired in to create it to the companies satisfaction.

Off the shelf - it is just software available to all to buy from normal computer stores.
